MIDDLE (7-8)

Middle School (7th–8th Grade): Navigating Important Years

Middle school is a pivotal time of growth and transition. Students are developing their identity, growing in independence, and preparing for the increased demands of high school. At GRCA, we create a supportive environment where middle schoolers are challenged academically, nurtured spiritually, and guided through these formative years with care and intentionality.

Our middle school program bridges elementary and high school, gradually increasing academic rigor while providing the structure and support students need. Small class sizes mean teachers know their students well and can guide them through both academic challenges and the social-emotional ups and downs of adolescence.

Academic Programs

Critical Thinking & Communication

The middle school curriculum becomes more specialized and rigorous with subject-specific teachers who bring deeper expertise to each content area. We focus on developing critical thinking skills, analytical reasoning, and effective communication. Students learn to evaluate information, form arguments, support claims with evidence, and express their ideas clearly in writing and discussion.

Study Skills & Ownership

Academic expectations increase as students learn to manage multiple assignments, meet deadlines, and take greater ownership of their learning. Study skills and time management are integrated throughout — students learn to organize materials, prioritize tasks, study effectively, and advocate for themselves. We're preparing them not just academically but teaching them how to be successful learners.

Language Arts

Middle school students engage with increasingly complex literature, analyzing themes, characters, and literary devices. They write persuasive essays, expository compositions, and research papers. Grammar and mechanics are reinforced and applied in writing. By eighth grade, students are strong readers and writers prepared for high school English courses.

Mathematics

Seventh graders develop understanding of decimals, ratios, percentages, and basic algebra while emphasizing problem solving. They also explore geometry, measurement, and data interpretation to build critical thinking. Eighth grade covers pre-algebra concepts including integers, equations, ratios, proportions, and geometry. Students develop abstract reasoning skills and learn to apply mathematical concepts to real-world problem solving.

Science

Middle school science builds on elementary foundations with deeper inquiry and experimentation. Students study life science, exploring cells, genetics, ecosystems, and human body systems. Physical science introduces concepts of matter, energy, motion, and forces. Students engage in hands-on labs, develop hypotheses, collect data, and draw conclusions.

Social Studies

Seventh and eighth grade focuses on world history and geography, studying ancient civilizations, major world religions, and global cultures. American history is also covered, from colonial times through the modern era, with emphasis on the founding of our nation, constitutional principles, and key historical events. Students develop historical thinking skills and learn to analyze primary sources.

Bible

Middle school chapel classes go deeper into theology and doctrine. Students study Old and New Testament books in detail, memorize Scripture, and learn to apply biblical principles to their lives. We introduce apologetics, helping students understand and defend their faith. The goal is to help students own their faith and develop a biblical worldview that shapes how they see the world.

Beyond Academics

Middle schoolers participate in daily chapel designed specifically for their age group. Messages address real questions and challenges students face while pointing them to Christ.

These years are critical for social-emotional development. We create a safe environment where students can navigate friendships, handle conflict, and develop healthy relationships. Teachers model Christian character and guide students in making wise choices, treating others with respect, and growing in maturity.
